Repairing the Harm

Benefits to the Person who did the Harm:

  • They face the real consequences of their actions.
  • Family and friends are encouraged to support them as they take responsibility and make amends to those they have harmed.
  • Participants may be directed to local help agencies, to address the underlying causes of their harmful actions.
  • Fulfillment of the restitution agreement will signal closure and participants’ re-integration into the community.
  • In many existing restorative justice programs, judges take this process into account when sentencing.
  • Underlying causes of crime can be uncovered and addressed, benefiting the whole community.
